L.H.S. News
December 1999

Principal: Mr. W.M. Boyes
Vice-Principal: Mr.  R.J. Wihlidal
Guidance Counsellor: Ms. S. Randall-Nadurak

From the Office:

Seasoning Greetings! It is with great joy that we wish the students, parents, and ratepayers a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday.

Thomas Drier's quote seems apt at this time of rejoicing and rededication: 'Ilfwe are ever to enjoy life, now is the time - not tomorrow or next year, The best preparation for a better life next year is a full, complete, joyous life this year. "

Now is a good time to reflect on our blessings and to recharge our spirits. May this holiday season be one of much happiness and joy.

The following article is reprinted with the permission of Mr. James Shaw, principal of Balgonie Elementary School.

Are we stealing from our children? Despite our best intentions, we may be robbing them of the opportunity to struggle, leaving them vulnerable to underachievement.

Schools today face an epidemic of underachievers, yet these children believe with all their hearts that they are incapable of doing the work asked of them. They say school is boring, irrelevant or too hard. They may seem confused, under constant stress or incapable of doing more.

Well meaning friends may suggest that parents be more understanding, more supportive or more helpful, but often they do create problems.

Mom and Dad to the rescue! These children may have similar problems when it comes to doing tasks at home. The youngsters have learned at an early age that adults will rescue them when the going gets tough. Children quickly become addicted to adult help and begin to believe adults' unstated Secretaries: Mrs. Schroeder, Mrs. Cuddington Telephone: 731-2262 Facsimile: 731-2494 E-mail: lumsdenhigh@hotmail.com

messages that they can only succeed with assistance.

Underachievers often have parents who had to struggle when they were children. They say, "I don't want my child to struggle like I had to. They deserve better." Their children live in a home where struggle is the enemy rather than an opportunity. This problem was less severe years ago. Parents that were preoccupied with scratching out a living gave their children tasks that helped out the family. Working and struggling at home prepared children to work and struggle at school.

Now that winter has arrived, a number of parents are considering holidays to warm, exotic locales or to sunny, snowy slopes. Last school year, some students missed an extended number of school days to join their families on vacation. As a result of their absence, students experienced difficulties in achieving marks and meeting attendance requirements. Although supportive of family vacations, the school administration strongly encourages planning to minimize the number of school days students miss.

To assist in vacation planning, please look carefully at the 1999/2000 school year calendar. As well, please note that students are required to write final examinations at the scheduled times. We thank you for your cooperation in this regard. If you require a school-year calendar, or wish to discuss this matter, please call the LHS Office at 731-2262.

Guidance/Student Services
Career Counselling

Ms. Randall-Nadurak has offered each Grade 12 student a career counselling appointment before the Christmas break. Students planning to enroll in SIAST programs have been advised to apply immediately because of SIAST's wait-list
admissions policy. University-bound students should be aware of the following Deadlines: Faculty of Social Work - January 15; University of Regina Faculty of Education - February 15. Most faculties at the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan have April 15 deadlines.

A SUTIL presentation by SIAST campuses, the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan, Carlton Regional College, and Lakeland Regional Community College was held on December 10, 1999. All students in Grades 11 and 12 attended these presentations.

February will be a busy month! On February 4, LHS students will be taking part in the University of Saskatchewan's "Experience Us" program. Students will also be taking part in the University of Regina's "Ambassador" program later in February.

Personal Counselling
LHS students and staff have recently completed an interest survey to identify personal or social issues which should be addressed. These survey results will be the impetus for a variety of workshops offered to meet the needs identified by members of the school community. Anyone wishing to obtain a copy of the survey results may contact Ms. Randall Nadurak.

Financial Planning
Students or parents interested in scholarship information may consult the following websites: www.parentsauide.com/fundinn or w~:~.student awards.com .
A student loans planning workshop will be held for interested students in the spring.
